Abstract This paper presents an analytic solution for the nozzle-extension thickness of a 3-DOF nozzle. Since measuring nozzle-extension thickness is difficult due to high temperature and pressure, we propose a scheme of estimation for nozzle-extension thickness by using 3-DOF nozzle motion. We establish a kinematic model of 3-DOF nozzle motion. The kinematic model is analytically solved from joint and length constraints of a 3-DOF nozzle driven by two actuators with fixed-pivot points. Moreover, we combine a nozzle-extension thickness model and the kinematic model in order to obtain an analytic solution of nozzle-extension thickness. The proposed scheme of nozzle-extension thickness is verified by numerical simulations.
