| Abstract |
This paper proposes checkpoint-based state preservation for energy-harvesting-based railway wayside monitoring nodes experiencing intermittent power due to fluctuations in harvested energy. To evaluate the energy and timing costs of checkpointing, experiments were conducted using an MCU with on-chip FRAM under various state sizes and clock frequencies. Based on these results, a constraint-based design formulation is suggested considering required state size, available checkpoint energy, and remaining execution time. An integrated checkpoint feasibility metric is formulated to determine whether each state-size and clock-frequency combination satisfies both energy and timing constraints. The metric enables feasible operating conditions to be identified according to the available energy and time costs. It also provides a systematic way to evaluate the minimum clock frequency that satisfies the checkpoint requirements for a given state size. |
