Abstract Network function virtualization (NFV) is a big trend for network operators because it can give lots of benefits to the operators for logistics, cost reduction, quick service launch, flexibility with rapid service scale up/down, efficient resource use by sharing the resources with multiple applications, etc. This article reviews the overall NFV architecture, its benefits and challenges, and checks the performance bottlenecks of each layer in NFV infrastructure (NFVI) and possible solutions, then, considers ways to reduce the performance bottlenecks of virtual machine (VM) to VM communications for service chaining within a physical server.
