Abstract |
Virtualization technology has been widely used and it is a broad topic. As the universe of I/O devices is large and diverse, this article focuses on I/O virtualization. The I/O virtualization gives many advantages, such as better I/O device utilization, seamless portability of virtual machines across servers, live migration, dynamic device management while virtual machines are running, virtual views over multiple I/O devices, additional new feature support not provided by hardware, etc. There are many techniques developed so far, which are software-based, hardware-based and hybrid one. This article reviews the benefits and characteristics of the I/O virtualization, current available technologies in software and hardware perspective, then, checks their status and trends. |
