Abstract The air flow rate inside drum is one of the most important factors determining the performance of clothes dryer. It is obvious that the amount of heat and mass transfer inside drum depends on the air flow rate, which shows an irregular and unsteady behavior since the flow resistance varies with the position and arrangement of clothes which move around arbitrarily inside rotating drum. Also it was found that the air flow rate varied with moisture content in clothes, and thus it varied as the clothes was dehydrated. In the present work, the effect of the weight of clothes and the moisture content on the air flow rate for various fan RPM has been studied experimentally for drums with different sizes, and normalized air flow rate correlations have been proposed. It is expected that the results of the present work would be helpful in analyzing the transfer phenomena inside drum more accurately.
