Abstract In Korea, renewable energy development and distribution have focused on solar, wind, and geothermal energy. Globally, the use of wood fuel is expanding to increase the proportion of renewable energy. Biomass energy, which utilizes wood fuel (wood chips or wood pellets), is a representative renewable energy source recognized by the International Energy Agency (IEA), along with solar, wind, and geothermal energy. In Korea, 20 kW class residential wood pellet boilers are widely used, and 100 kW to 10 MW wood pellet boilers are used for industrial purposes. Usually, industrial wood pellet boilers supply a constant amount of fuel, and the blower delivers the appropriate amount of air according to the amount of fuel. Thus, it is difficult to achieve optimal combustion with changes in the calorific value or amount of fuel. We conducted an experimental study of emission characteristics with and without air-fuel control for a 100 kW industrial wood pellet boiler. To control the air-fuel ratio of the boiler, we used a lambda sensor, a PID controller, and an inverter to control blower. Without an air-fuel control system, O2 concentrations tended to increase slightly over time due to inadequate combustion air supply. In particular, CO emissions reduced to 24% compared to the system without air-fuel control.
