Abstract In this study, an analytical study on the compression strength and size effect of concrete was carried out using the meso scale finite element method. Prior to the analysis, a method of defining concrete as a meso-scale composite and multi-phase was described. The concrete was assumed to be a composite with three phases, aggregates, mortar matrix, and ITZ, and the material properties of each phase were applied. The uniaxial and flexural compressive failure behavior of concrete was analyzed by the constructed analytical model, and the size effect was confirmed through this analysis. In addition, the performance of the analytical model was evaluated by comparing the experimental results with the analytical results.
