Abstract |
The objective of this study was to analyze thermal responses of the heat storage tanks by determining time constants using experiments and theoretical methods and comparing them. According to the experimental results, the time constants in AC1 and AC2 were approximately 4 hours and 20 minutes and 3 hours and 5 minutes, respectively. The time constant intervals between a sensor and the next one in the experiment was approximately 30 minutes in AC1 and 35~40 minutes in AC2. In determining time constants using theoretical methods, it was initially assumed that only mechanism of heat storage in tanks is thermal conduction by diffusion. Determined time constants by the foregoing assumption showed significant deviations from those of the experiments. This implied that even though experimental time constants show linear behaviors and tendencies, effects of thermal convection in the tanks must be considered. The two thermal convection modes, natural and forced convection were compared and the results showed that natural convection is more significant than the forced convection. |
