Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to investigate the ventilation performance of two strategies when cough particles were discharged from the infected patient in the Airborne Infection Isolation Room (AIIR), and propose a design to reduce the risk of aerosol transmission. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was used to simulate the airflow as well as for tracing the behavior of particles. The results show that the location of the exhaust air diffuser significantly impacts the particle dispersion in the isolation room. Case D (ceiling supply air and low wall exhaust air over the patient’s head) was more effective in removing infectious particles and reducing the contaminant exposure to the healthcare worker. In Case U (ceiling supply air and ceiling exhaust air), a large number of particles were entrained back into the airstream and spread to the entire room. Although it is an isolation room that produces unidirectional airflow, cough particles were deposited onto the patient, bed, side rails, healthcare worker, ceiling, floor, and sidewall. |
