Abstract In South Korea, more than 24% of the total national energy consumption is from the building sector, wherein building energy consumption has rapidly increased. As a result, it is critically important to reduce building energy consumption. In particular, windows of building envelopes are generally vulnerable on heat loss and gain from the solar radiation and insulation level of the glazing material. Various types of external shading devices are widely used to efficiently control the intake of solar illuminance and insolation. Additionally, shading affects heat transfer through the window glazing. That is, the heat transfer performance of window glazing varies by the type of shading devices and operation. Eventually, building energy loads decrease or increase from the heat transfer performance changed by the shading. Thus, the heat transfer analysis of the window glazing with shading devices must better evaluate building energy loads. To achieve this, this study conducted a computer-aided simulation and analysis to evaluate the amounts of conduction, convection, and radiation heat rates through a window with different shading devices.
