Abstract In this study, a small-scale thermal network with multiple thermal energy prosumers was configured and a bi-directional heat supply operation for thermal energy sharing or heat trading was experimentally investigated. The conventional centralized thermal network was remodeled to bi-directional thermal network and two buildings, among the seven buildings, were retrofitted to the heat prosumer buildings. The heat prosumer buildings, including an absorption heat pump system and a geothermal heat pump system, were connected to four buildings devoid of heat production facility under the cooling and heating and hot water supply thermal network. Through this research work, it was proved that the bi-directional heat supply could be performed during five weeks cooling and heating operation in summer and winter. It was also found that the proposed bi-directional heat supply network construction method could be used to implement heat transactions between buildings on a heat network with multiple heat energy prosumers.
