Abstract Following the publication of Part 1, Part 2 focuses on the development trends of key element technologies associated with heat transfer characteristics. Previous research focused on methods to overcome low thermal conductivity, and various heat exchanger design methods have been proposed to improve this using solid media such as fins or additives such as carbon particles. In addition, the operation method for optimal performance, when the latent heat energy storage system is connected to the main combustion system, is discussed. Finally, demonstration research cases, which are being conducted in Germany and Korea, are introduced to discuss the current status and future direction of this technological development in combined heat and power, and steam generation. In Korea, R&D for a latent heat energy storage system, through waste heat recovery, is an ongoing national project and is scheduled to be demonstrated in 2025. Projects involved in high-temperature latent heat energy storage technology to reduce carbon emissions, by reducing the direct use of fossil fuels, are currently ongoing.
