Abstract Utilization of a water source heat pump system of a river is one way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. A water source heat pump system shows a high energy efficiency from characteristics of river, which has a relatively stable temperature throughout the year. However, a water source heat pump system intakes and discharges water from river. Its discharges can affect the temperature of the river. In this study, the water temperature recovery distance of the Han River was calculated using the CE-QAUL-W2, a two-dimensional lateral average hydraulic and water quality model. The Han River is where hydrothermal energy such as Lotte World Tower and Han River Basin Headquarters is implemented. It was modeled by subdividing upper, middle, and lower regimes. The recovery distance of the Han River’s temperature from the discharging process in the water source heat pump system in summer was calculated to be 150 m to 650 m. The water temperature recovery distance of the Han River in winter was calculated to be 400 m to 1.4 km.
