Abstract This paper studies the characteristics of series arcs during the breaking operation of electric contacts of DC switches or socket outlet and plugs on inductive loads. Through experiments of DC series arc on inductive loads, arc extinction distance and arc transient voltage are analyzed and compared with pure resistive loads. This paper presents the arc-safe operation area according to the opening speed of electrode contacts and the time constants of various inductive loads in low-voltage DC(LVDC) systems.
