Abstract The MMC-HVDC system is a large-capacity power conversion system that requires high operational reliability. IEC-62501 proposes test standards to indirectly guarantee the reliability and performance of an entire system through the valve performance test. This paper proposes a new control method of valve performance test circuit for MMC-based HVDC power systems. The proposed control method can significantly reduce the rated voltage of the inverter’s DC power supply, and the inductor size of the test circuit. The validity of the proposed control method is verified through simulation and experiment with hardware-in-the-loop simulation results.
