Abstract |
This study proposes a harmonic mitigation method for shipboard power systems with high concentrations of variable-frequency drive (VFD) loads. The use of VFDs continues to grow in industrial applications. These loads are typically connected via diode rectifiers, resulting in increased total harmonic distortion (THD). In reefer vessels where refrigerated containers are driven by VFD-based motors, the power system often exceeds the harmonic distortion limits specified by classification societies (8% for THD and 5% for individual harmonics). The proposed method utilizes phase shifts between transformers to cancel dominant harmonic components generated by diode rectifiers. Through this approach, voltage THD is effectively reduced without requiring additional filters. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified through simulation analysis. |
