Abstract This paper proposes a harmonic current controller based on a multiple synchronous reference frame to reduce harmonic currents in motors with saliency and flux saturation. The proposed controller is designed to provide a stable response and the desired controller performance by considering the saliency and flux saturation of the motor. The proposed method can also be applied to Surface mounted permanent synchronous motor(SPMSM), a motor without saliency, using the same structure. The controller gain is applied before rotational transformation, considering the saliency of the motor. The inductance gain term is designed by dividing it into dynamic and apparent inductances, considering the flux saturation of the motor. The key concept of the proposed method is to achieve a stable response by designing the open-loop transfer function of the harmonic controller in the form of a resonant controller through the pole-zero cancellation of the controller and the plant. The performance of the controller was validated through experiments using an IPMSM, and results showed that it had improved performance compared with conventional controllers.
