Abstract |
AbstractSummmarizing the housing and the field study of life, the meaning of a branch family in jeju was that parental generation and the child generation reside in the same courtyard with economy apart. There were two residences: the main building, and subordinate one where the two generations lived their lives, setting tables and sleeping independently. Housing in the main and subodinate building in jeju was designed to allow independent space. I could find these features in the placing of kitchen equipment, warehousing, separate porches and independent economic life. The space structure of the main and subordinate buildings preserved privacy and maintained mutual exchanges by keeping a fixed distance in a courtyard without any undulations. The use of space was usually made independently by each generation. However, I could see the separate and shared life happen systematically in common use of space on special occasions. In conclusion, I could not find any rankings or the order of ranks among generations, man and woman, mother-in-law and daughter-in-law in the space of the main and subordinate building in jeju. I could say that the two families were, in fact, one family in daily life |
