Abstract |
Regardless of the times, the symmetry is an inherently attractive subject for the both of architects and designers. And it has been used as basic design principle from the beginning of building history. Actually, We can easily find the good example of symmetry in many buildings, which adopt symmetry as one of the tools for beautiful design or effective site planning elements. This study tries to develop the new approach about the expression method of symmetry based on the point group theory. The point group theory is grouping of things by symmetry, and each group shows similar mathematical characteristic. This study considers group theory and symmetry, and tries to find the features of symmetry in various building examples in point of architectural design and planning. The symmetry and group theory can be presented and accessed by mathematical formulas such as algebra of matrices. And these formulas can be used for the design computation. Originally, The Group theory is based on mathematics. But, the major concern of this study is analyzing a point of similarity from the architectural design and planning, instead of extracting the mathematical symmetry formula. Architectural designers or planners who need to delve further for more creative design will be assisted by the `point group theory` to do so. |
