Abstract |
The hospital settings are usually designed for staff needs rather than for patient needs. The purpose of this study was to identify the design elements for the patient-focused hospital. This study focused on the patient rooms. The subjects of this study were 97 inpatients who were hospitalized in two general hospitals in Busan. The interviews were carried out from July to August, 2002. The subjects answered about the importance of 25 design elements for the patient room design. The results were as follows: 1) The ambient elements such as noise, ventilation, and natural light should be considered primarily in the design process of the patient rooms. 2) The patient room design should be home-like and there should be windows in each room, so that the patients can recognize what time or season is. 3) The functional elements such as the location of nursing station or the size of the patient room should be considered importantly in the design process. 4) The patient room with two or three beds would be the appropriate room type. |
