Abstract As various social problems are widespread, community space are becoming more important as a spatial tool for solving the community problems and activating the community. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of community space at areas with considerable proportion of vulnerable population in Japan. The research methods were literature research, field observation and interview. Based on the collected data, the characteristics of physical space, operation and program, and community properties were analyzed in detail. According to the results of the study, the community space in Japan was developing according to the characteristics of each region. It means that the community space has a different role in promoting the community depending on the characteristics of the area. The physical forms and services of community space were also becoming diverse and the number of cases of community space using the empty space of the community were increasing. It is important for the community space to support community properties of regionality, community spirit, and organic vitality in a balanced manner, and the role of local NPO is important for sustainability of community support. Based on the results of this study, It is expected to understand the role of changing community space and to be a starting point for discussions on the direction of community space.
