Abstract This paper examines the color preferences for interior parts of rooms in geriatric hospitals by surveying elderly patients, nurses and common elderly people. The core of the research is the comparison of these groups which may lead to figure out the better color conditions for geriatric hospitals. The survey was conducted in 8 hospitals in China and South Korea, and IRI 120 color chart and color image scales were used for its questionnaire. In general color preference survey, warm colors were generally preferred while the aged selected Vivid-Red color the most and nurses preferred Bright-Yellow. For more precise results, the research produced 6 pairs of color groups, and 5 interior elements such as ceiling, wall, floor, furniture and fabric. The respondents preferred 'light', 'pure', 'natural', 'classical', 'organized', and 'delightful' colors, and especially patients group showed some different results from other groups. This paper with various results and differences would be used as a helpful data for more advanced color studies and interior designs for geriatric hospitals.
