Abstract Community design is growing with the participation of local residents to improve the urban environment. And also the public space is one of the main factors of a more liveable and safer city. In the public space, problems concerning the lack of placeness(a sense of place) arise from standardization and uniformity in line with modernization. This study aims to analyze 'Placemaking' based on the theoretical understanding of placeness. To achieve the study objective, this study examined the planning aspects of spatial practice and strategy by PPS(project for public spaces) and the advanced research on the concept of PPS projects. Through the analysis, as the paradigm changes from the rational planning process to the collaborative planning process. Community space needs more active changes that encourage social communication. As a result, participatory design is growing with local residents to improve the town environment. Spatial design should adopt the interaction approach method on the basis of urban environment.
