Title Methods of Linking Places and Contexts in the Art Museum Architecture of Renzo Piano

Abstract Renzo Piano's architecture clearly has a number of consistent and unique characteristics over his 40-year working period. Particularly, he has shown several core methods that can be commonly found in art museums designed by him. However, only a few studies are available and a solid theory has not been established for his architecture, in comparison to the number of projects conducted by him and his fame. The objectives of this study were to examine the architectural characteristics of the art museums designed by Renzo Piano, classify his art museum types, and analyze methods of connecting places and contexts. This study analyzed the design methods and types shown in his entire art museum projects. This study analyzed the relationship with the place, space and form, and the characteristics of the exhibition space after selecting six projects (most suitable two projects for each type). There were three types: 1) art museum space configuration in connection with the contexts of the street; 2) open art museum space configuration centered by Piazza; and 3) art museum space configuration arranged around vertical layers. From case analysis, it was identified that there were three ways to link places with contexts: 1) traces of urban context revealed from the inside and outside of art museums; 2) spatial installations of art museums for the organic relationship with places; and 3) the expansion of art experience owing to borderless exhibition spaces. It was found that art museum designs of Piano commonly configured the shape and space of art museums in relation to spaces, although their design characteristics could be classified into three types. The importance of this study was to comprehensively summarize the art museum cases of Piano and identify the characteristics of them. It is believed that the results of this study will contribute to understanding the architectural philosophy of Piano. The authors hope that the results of this study will be a guideline for design modern art museum architecture.
