Abstract |
This study aimed to investigate the ‘Documenta Urbana’ housing exhibition and to discuss its historical meaning when the paradigm shift in housing architecture emerged after the modernism and the late modernism. Thus, the innovative design demonstrated in the experimental housing was examined and the transitional characteristics toward the postmodern style was understood in the frame of pluralism. The case analysis is focussed on the architecture of H. Hertzberger, H. I. Baller, and O. Steidle. Each case was in terms of ‘urban and social context’, ‘plastic formation and mass design’, ‘floor plan and interface between indoor and outdoor space’ and ‘facade and surface design’ analyzed. Through this study, the feature of pluralistic design and its architectural vocabulary was grasped. As a result, the trend of pluralistic design revealed in the Documenta Urbana housing exhibition is as follows. First, the populism in the residential architecture was emerged. Second, there was a tendency to relate to the historicism as well as to the vernacular architecture. Third, a design deviated from the strict purism was appeared. Fourth, housing complex attempted to create a new typology and urban context. In conclusion, the ‘Documenta Urbana’ showed heterogeneity rather than following a dogmatic architectural style by weakening the spatial uniformity and considering the varied visual composition. |
