Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to examine characteristics of Shower·bathing behavior and investigate the demand of home modification in bathroom for the elderly in order to derive elements of home modification in the bathrooms, which took into account the elders’ bathing. A face to face interview survey was conducted to 299 elderly people over the age of 65 living in metropolitan area from May to June, 2016. The results were as follows: There were many senior citizens who took a shower sitting on the bathroom floor or bathroom chairs outside the bathtub or shower booth and among those who bathed in the bathtub, the proportion of them who stood up was high. Depending on the social demographic and housing characteristics, the physical characteristics of the bathroom and the way in which it was performed differed. Elderly people who are single, elderly, economically poor, and in poor health were found to have high rates of showering on chairs or on the floor in the bathroom. There was also a difference in the demand of home modification in the bathroom depending on the location of the bathing. The requirements for each element of bathroom modification according to the method of performing such bathing behavior were also reflected in the results, suggesting the direction of the home modification in bathroom and specific elements of modification according to the method of bathing by the elderly.
This research suggests a specialized element and common element for home modification in bathroom, divided by standing in a bathtub with a shower and sitting in a position outside the bathtub and shower |
