Abstract The study aims at finding ways to improve the separation and disconnection between Apt complex's inside and outside. It is carried out through literature review, questionnaires of six selected complexes, and IPA (Importance Performance Analysis). The results can be summarized as follows. First of all, the results of literature review can be summarized as improvement plans such as creating a network of spaces which can form a complementary relationship between Apts and the outside, and creating open spaces where tenants and neighbors can communicate and interact with each other. Secondly, the results of questionnaires show tenants' high satisfaction with the environment and low recognition of separation and disconnection and rather, high perception of the need for the fence because of safety or privacy, on the contrary, neighbors' high recognition of separation and disconnection and low perception of the need for a fence. Thirdly, the IPA of tenants' questionnaires results shows that the apt complex needs a fence, and simultaneously, it allows the tenants to interact and communicate with neighbors. In the IPA of neighbors' questionnaires results, it is important to make sure that the apartment complex does not require a fence. This shows contradictory recognition and analysis results for the fence, which can be regarded as the biggest factor causing the separation and disconnection of the complex. These points are also a point of disagreement between the tenants and neighbors, and tenants and theorists. Nevertheless, in all of the research results, considering the continuous relationship between the surrounding area and further urban structure, and also considering the social integration apt complex with the surrounding area, it can be considered that to mitigate the boundary of the apt complex is meaningful as an improvement direction.
