Abstract Children's hospital waiting room should create an positive atmosphere and reduce stress caused by treatment. Children with low language expression ability can relieve anxiety and stress through senses and physical play. We observed sixty children who visited two children’s hospital in Busan to find design alternatives for the waiting room which can allow enough sensory and physical activities. The observation was conducted twice in each hospital from 09:00 to 12:00 in week days. The results and conclusions are as follows. (1) The children patients of A hospital more engaged in sensory activities and those of B hospital more physical activities. (2) Children patients in both hospitals showed tactile activities with papers so often. The listening activities to the rustling sound of the paper were also frequently observed. (3) Sensory activities with olfactory were rarely observed in both hospitals. It is necessary for designing the waiting room to apply elements that can support sensory activities.
