Abstract The purpose of this study is to analyze characteristics such as research contents, research methods, and subjects, including research conducted in both housing·architectural fields and medical·health fields, in connection with home modification for the elderly for 20 years from 2001 to 2020 when the research on home modification for the elderly in Korea began in earnest. By analyzing the research on the home modification for the elderly in quantity and quality, we diagnosed the flow of the research on the home modification for the elderly and the academic research results so far and sought the direction of follow-up research. For this study, a total of 34 papers published from 2001 to August 2020 were selected as subjects of analysis for this study. The analysis items of this study were the research field of the researcher, the contents of the study, the subjects of the study, and the method of research. As a results, the study of home modification for the elderly is increasing quantitatively, but not enough for the needs of the times. Recently, research by experts from various academic circles has been attempted in the health·medical sectors as well as research on home modification. In recent years, the proportion of case-oriented qualitative research has been increasing rather than quantitative research focusing on the survey of the elderly and the analysis of the needs for modification. In the future, studies should be carried out to identify the positions and needs of all stakeholders and to establish links and cooperation among them in the entire process from the implementation stage to the post-management stage.
