Abstract |
This study was conducted to extract characteristics of EEG arousal reaction to changes in ceiling height, which is one of architectural design elements influencing human mentality and behavior. For this study, after applying two areas and four ceiling heights to individual rooms of a postpartum care center, a total of eight 360-degree 3D stimuli were produced, and EEGs were measured using a dry EEG measuring equipment. Using RAB(alpha/beta), which is an EEG indicator, characteristics of arousal reaction before and after stimulation were analyzed, and the study results are as follows. First, when analyzing differences in arousal reaction to changes in ceiling height of minimum area before and after stimulation, RAB indicator values showed statistically significant differences on channel O1 with a ceiling height of 2.3m and 2.7m(p<.05). Second, when analyzing differences in arousal reaction to changes in ceiling height of facility mean area before and after stimulation, RAB indicator values showed statistically significant differences on channel O2 with a ceiling height of 2.1m, 2.3m, 2.5m and 2.7m, which were all variables of ceiling height(p<.05). Third, when analyzing differences between areas in arousal reaction focusing on the occipital lobe that displayed significant differences, the minimum area showed marked differences in arousal reaction depending on variables of ceiling height, but the facility mean area showed slight differences in arousal reaction depending on variables of ceiling height. Fourth, when analyzing the brain parts that were sensitive to arousal reaction, in relation to changes in ceiling height of minimum area and facility mean area, the reduction in RAB indicator values was most remarkable in the occipital lobe, equally. Lastly, the analysis results of arousal levels of RAB indicator values in the channel satisfying the statistical significance level and in all the channels indicated that in both the minimum area and facility mean area, a ceiling height of 2.5m had the lowest arousal level and thus could make users feel comfortable. |
