Abstract Recently, with the surge of the elderly people in China nowadays, the number of the nursing homes has increased. However, compared to many developed countries, China has only been in an ageing society for a relatively short period. Hence, the laws pertaining to the aging is necessary to be supplimented and revised. In line with the Japan Universal Design Codes, the study was conducted as an on-site survey of five-star or higher nursing homes in Beijing, China. Taking into account the characteristics of China's aging society, the improvements to nursing home facilities was proposed through an analysis of the current state of nursing home development and a reconsideration of the indoor facilities as well. This study is aimed at providing a concete and detailed reference for criteria design for the future construction and renovation of nursing homes in China.
