Abstract |
In a period of ever-aging societies, improving the health and quality of life of the elderly has emerged as an important issue. This study was performed to analyze the current situation and the status of the caring for the elderly in the society from an elderly-friendly perspective. It was conducted at nine elderly public centers located in Eunpyeong-gu, Gangnam-gu, and Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, operated from 2010 to the present, were selected and surveyed for the purpose of analyzing the health care services supported by the Seoul Metropolitan Administration. The literature review suggested five key components of effective elderly healthcare: cognition, sensitivity, accessibility, safety, convenience, and sociality. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, the health care program of the public welfare center is divided into the health and fitness facility and a special needs care facility. The health and fitness facility at the public welfare center provides exercise equipment that taylors to one’s physical condition and age. The special need care facility provides in depth consultation and perform physical therapy and remediation as needed. Second, in the Health and fitness facility, cognition and sociality were prominent, followed by safety, sensitivity, and accessibility. The special needs care facility was also found to promote high cognition and sociality similar to the Health and fitness facility. As there are many elderly people with different illnesses and special needs in the health care program at the welfare center, all programs and services should be designed and provide to the individual’s physical and cognitive abilities. Our federal and local government should emphasis and direct all efforts on various attempts to develop and maintain the the best social welfare programs available to the elderlies. |
