Abstract As the elderly population is rapidly increasing in recent years, the task of establishing a residential environment in which the elderly can live safely and comfortably in the local community is emerging as a major topic. The purpose of this study is to develop an evaluation index for community continuous residence of welfare housing facilities for the elderly to lay the foundation for the detailed AIC planning guidelines. The progress system of this study to derive the Aging in Community (AIC) evaluation index of welfare housing facilities for the elderly was largely conducted in two aspects: ‘setting the AIC evaluation index’ and ‘expert verification’ of welfare housing facilities for the elderly. As a result of the study, the AIC evaluation index items of this study were classified into accessibility, safety, comfort, convenience, and flexibility of the physical environment, and 35 detailed indicators were derived. The social and economic environment was classified into social participation, interactivity, community, and economic feasibility, and 21 detailed indicators were derived. The service environment was classified into service integration, service accessibility, individual service, and service expertise, and 20 detailed indicators were derived. This study is a part of the study on the AIC planning guidelines for welfare facilities for the elderly, and it is planned to derive specific AIC planning elements based on the derived evaluation indicators.
