Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to examine the unique characteristics of Alvaro Siza’s church architecture by comparing the Santa Maria church and the Anastasis church in terms of spatial composition and examining their similarities and differences. The results of the study are as follows. First, Siza’s church design is a representative example of the his attitude toward the tradition and history of architecture. In addition, because of the difference in time over 20 years, their comparison provides an opportunity to recognize changes in Siza’s architecture. Second, the comparison of the Siza’s church strengthens the sculptural tendency in the form composition, and the attempt to change the inner surface’s fragmentation tendency through overlapping faces can be inferred in his other designs. Third, Siza has a strict geometric composition in church design which seems to be the result of a modern reinterpretation of the traditional Western church form and consideration of the church’s liturgical rituals. Fourth, the Siza attempted various efforts to change the strictness and unity accompanying the geometric composition in church design. In particular, the location and size of various openings changed the appearance, and various natural light inflows attempted to change the interior space. |
