Abstract This study centers on the theory of “genius loci” (spirit of place) to systematically examine how exhibition space design in museums located in China’s ethnic regions reflects regional culture and ethnic characteristics. By combining theoretical analysis and empirical research, the study establishes an integrated research framework. On the theoretical level, three core dimensions of spatial representation of spirit of place are identified: historical continuity, symbolic expression, and experiential resonance. Based on these dimensions, the study proposes eight specific design evaluation indicators and sixteen influencing elements, forming a preliminary evaluation system applicable to exhibition spaces in ethnic region museums. In the empirical section, the Ordos Museum in Inner Mongolia is selected as the primary case study. Through multidimensional analysis from the perspectives of design elements, spatial perception, cultural identity, and exhibition innovation, the study tests the applicability and operability of the proposed evaluation system. The case reveals that the construction of spirit of place in ethnic museums often demonstrates common features such as the organic integration of architectural forms with local natural and cultural symbols, narrative logic organized along linear time axes with thematic focus, metaphorical spatial translations of cultural symbols, and the combination of multisensory interaction with digital technology. The findings demonstrate that under the guidance of spirit of place, ethnic museums can transcend conventional modes of display and become culturally immersive, emotionally engaging environments. Such spatial designs not only enhance visitors’ sense of cultural memory and emotional resonance but also deepen their understanding and identification with ethnic heritage. Ultimately, the museum serves not only as a space for information transmission but also as a meaningful medium for cultural preservation and public education. The evaluation framework developed in this research offers both theoretical insight and practical reference for future museum planning and spatial design related to ethnic cultural expression.
