| Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to analyze senior residence cases using a quantitative research method using space syntax to identify the floor plan characteristics of unit units. Forty-four cases of senior residence units in Seoul were selected for this study, and main depth, connectivity, integration, control, and intelligiblity were analyzed using DepthmapX 0.8.0 based on space syntax. Major results of this study are followings. First, as the unit size of senior residence increased, the spatial center of the floor plan changed into hallways, corridors, and living rooms. The configuration of central spaces varied according to unit size, reflecting the high proportion of single- and two-person elderly households and resulting in diverse unit layouts. Second, spaces requiring higher levels of privacy, such as master bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as relatively less frequently used spaces such as multipurpose rooms and balconies, were generally located farther from the spatial center of the unit. Third, in some smaller units, auxiliary spaces?particularly bathrooms?functioned as mediating spaces connecting public and private zones. These findings highlight the importance of a comprehensive understanding of residents’ characteristics and lifestyles, the planning of diverse unit layouts, and the spatial organization of each functional area in clear relation to the central space in order to enhance wayfinding and ensure safe movement within senior residences. |
