Abstract This study redefines smart interior as an integrated interior-architectural domain and proposes directions for a user-context-centered design process by analyzing limitations of existing design processes. First, 116 domestic studies on smart homes and smart interiors (2013-2025) were analyzed through the Korea Citation Index. Second, design process models?RIBA Plan of Work with Smart Building Overlay, Design Thinking approaches, and ArTSE framework?were compared based on user participation, technology-space integration, process structure, and operation stage reflection. User experience-service research accounted for 91.4%, technology-space integration for 44.8%, while design process research represented only 20.7%, indicating insufficient systematic methodology. Most studies focused on design and construction phases with limited consideration of operation and maintenance. Key limitations identified were: separation of technology and spatial design, late-stage add-on integration, insufficient user context reflection, and exclusion of operation from early design. Five transition directions were proposed: (1) multi-layered structuring encompassing spatial, technology, service, and operation layers; (2) early integration of user scenarios through persona and scenario techniques; (3) simultaneous integration of technology and spatial design from initial stages; (4) cyclical linkage with operation stages through post-occupancy evaluation and feedback loops; (5) introduction of a multi-criteria decision-making(MCDM) framework for technology selection. This study contributes by approaching smart interior as a paradigm shift encompassing user context and operational sustainability, rather than merely technology application.
