| Abstract |
This study examines the spatial expression characteristics and methods of Anne Holtrop’s ‘Material Gesture’, reinterpreting it through the logic of indeterminacy. In the context of climate crisis, environmental change, and the rise of artificial intelligence, the limits of modern thought grounded in fixed and controllable order become evident.
Accordingly, architecture is reconsidered not as a finalized form but as a procedural event shaped by diverse interactions. From this perspective, the study explores a new direction for architectural thought that moves beyond form-oriented design. As for the research methodology, this study examines the philosophical background of the ‘Material Gesture’ based on Anne Holtrop’s lectures, writings, and interviews. From the perspective of the logic of indeterminacy, this discourse is reconfigured into an analytical framework consisting of 4 architectural dimensions: form, process, relationship, and perception. By applying this framework to an analysis of his major works, the study derives specific characteristics and methods of spatial expression. The results show that ‘Material Gesture’ is expressed through four key characteristics and methods. (1) Processuality generates non-formal geometries by incorporating material states and transformations through techniques such as casting and tracing. (2) Correspondence treats external conditions like topography and climate as active design elements, forming multi-layered relational structures. (3) Emergence integrates temporal changes, such as oxidation and weathering, to enable unpredictable spatial experiences. (4) Trace reveals accumulated time through layered surfaces and imprints rather than erasing them. In conclusion, this study redefines “Material Gesture” as a structural concept rooted in the generative logic of indeterminacy, thereby proposing a theoretical framework for interpreting relational spatial design. It is academically significant in that it provides concrete form to design thinking grounded in process-oriented and relation-centered perspectives. |
