Title Spatial Configuration Analysis of Learning Transition Spaces in Public Libraries Based on Multiliteracies

Abstract Public libraries have evolved into complex learning environments, yet the spatial conditions that enable transitions between learning stages remain insufficiently explained. This study examines how transitions among the four Multiliteracies stages?Experiencing (A), Conceptualizing (B), Analyzing (C), and Applying (D)?are spatially organized in ten public libraries completed after 2011. Programs were reclassified by stage, and area ratios, adjacency patterns, open spaces (hall, void, atrium), and circulation nodes were analyzed to identify transition structures. The results reveal a marked spatial concentration in Stage B, while Stages C and D remain comparatively underrepresented, suggesting that discussion, collaboration, and making activities require stronger spatial grounding beyond reading-centered programs. In adjacency patterns, Stages A and D are predominantly arranged in single-sided configurations, while Stages B and C exhibit distributed connection patterns and function as transition hubs. Open spaces mediate these relationships in distinct ways: halls form horizontal interfaces where B and C activities are aggregated, voids penetrate slabs between B and NC to organize visual continuity and vertical circulation, and atriums integrate upper and lower levels with A-stage programs, reinforcing openness and centrality. Three transition structures are identified: horizontal sequential transitions across floors, A-centered transitions anchored by atrium?core junctions, and core-centered vertical circulation structures formed through the coupling of open spaces and nodes. These findings indicate that learning transitions are shaped by the combined organization of spatial arrangement, open spaces, and circulation systems rather than by program adjacency alone.
