Abstract The seismic analysis is usually carried out using the building code and modal combination methods. It is well known fact that the modal combination method, which is using the design spectrum, is the most appropriate method for the seismic analysis of structures. However, the design spectrum is not yet available in Korea, and unfortunately, we do not have recorded and reliable earthquake records that need for developing the spectrum. Until we will have our own recorded data, it is unavoidable to use ground motion data recorded in other countries such as the U.S and Japan. In this study, total sixty ground motion data are adopted to develope the design spectrum according to their intensities, and the results are compared with the foreign design spectra including G.Housner's, the UBC spectrum, and the dynamic coefficients of our national building code. The values of proposed desing spectrum are tabulated to be used in practice.
