Abstract The purpose of this study is to find out two-sided hierarchy of space in religious architecture. That is composed of literal hierarchy and ambiguous hierarchy. And another problems are the finding out the real facts of that hierarchy and the reasons of the facts.The subjects of this study are the hierarchical forms and hierarchical factors of influence in the buildings of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Islam. Hierarchical factors are divided into direct factors and indirect factors.As a result of this study, literal hierarchy could be found out generally in space of the religious buildings, but partially ambiguous hierarchy could be found out, too. The reason is believed to be at the symbolic statue. And this tendency could be find out at the both sides of many statues and none statue. This study forms a line in the chain of hierarchical study of church architecture.
