A Study on the Interior Materials of the Inner Palace Buildings of the Chosun Dynasty in the 17th century |
Abstract |
From the documents written about building the palaces of the 17th century, the following facts were found. The wooden floor and the ondol equipment were widely spread to the queen's quarters and the servants' quarters. The boards of ceilings were painted with a chinese phoenix in the queen's quarters, while a peony blossoms in the annex quarters. Almost every walls were furnished with various windows and doors which were differed according to the floor materials or the position of the windows. There were distinct gradation of the interior materials between the queen's quarters and the annex buildings. Also, it was found that the ondol which was only equipped in the queen's quarters formerly, had spread to the servant's quarters in the 17th cemtury. |
