Abstract The purpose of this study is to present the "De Stijl" architectural movement, which was conducted by Theo van Doesburg. Even though Theo van Doesburg's works and theories strongly influenced Modern architects, they, in fact, did not estimate much his experimental architecture. The first practical work of architecture realized by Doesburg was his remodelling of the "Aubette" cafe, in Strasbourg (1926-1928).For this remodelling plan, Doesburg worked intensively on the colour sheme, for which he published many studies and dissertations. With this work, Doesburg tried to challenge Mondrian's aesthetical idea (de nieuwe beelding, neo-plasticism), and to propose a new one (contra-compositie, elementarism). In fact, Doesburg also used several other words to discuss the concept of "contra-compositie", for example : "transformation-perpetuelle", "variants", "anti-static", etc. This study intends to explain the meaning of Theo van Doesburg's colour scheme at the Aubette Cafe, and also to describe the creative process involved by Doesburg's aesthetical (plastic) concept.
