Abstract There are several situations in which the walls may be subjected to dynamic load. In order to predict the behaviour of the structure, several tests have been conducted to study it under cyclic loads. In seismic regions, walls must be able to withstand cyclic loading due to in plane shear. It has been found that inclusion of infill walls have a major influence on the dynamic reponse of a frame. The studies on the infilled frames subjected to lateral loading have shown that the reponse sensibility of a structure may be substantially increased, because the increased stiffness of the infilled frame may shift the fundamental frequency of the structure towards the higher energy part of the earthquake spectrum. In this context, a contradiction exists between stiffness on the one hand, and high strength on the other, both of which are inherent properties of an infilled frame. If it is adequately designed, the infilled frame will have both high strength and stiffness during normal conditions, but wall sustain only low earthquake loading during extreme condition with various shear connector.
