Abstract As the height of the structure increases the effect of column shortening became an important factor which should be considered in the design and construction of high-rise building. The estimation of column shortening in composite an concrete structural systems is more complicated than that of steel structure because of their characteristics of deformation. With the load capacity acting on each column increases the structural engineers befan to use the higher strength concrete column. A comparison ofcolumn shortening effect beween a normal strength concrete to a high strength concrete has been made in this research by applying the same load condition on 37 story composite column. As the strength of the concrete increases the elastic shortening amount became smaller while the inelastic shortening amount became larger. The total shortening of composite column which use the higher strength concrete showed little difference compared to those of the lower strength concrete.
