Beam-to-Column Connections with Square Hollow Section Columns |
Abstract |
The objective of this study is to investigate the structural behavior of beam-to-column connections in which square hollow section members are used for columns. There are three types in already established beam-to-column connections with square hollow section columns for rigid joints, that is, diaphragm penetrated type, inside diaphragm type and outside diaphragm type have been developed till now. But it is difficult and is complicated to apply to high rise buildings because of installation of diaphragms under the condition of our country. In this paper the new type of beam-to-column connection is suggested when square hollow section members are used for columns. Simply compressing tests and bending tests are carried out about new suggested type and its strength is evaluated. Yield line theory is applied to assess the strength of new type connections analytically and the results of analysis are compared with test results. The increases of strength can be expected if the thickness of plate of connections becomes large from the results of simply compressing tests. And the yield line theory can be used to assess the strength of connections without diaphragm. |
