Abstract Traditional houses registered as cultural properties are not suitable for modern living patterns, and being unprotected, their original shapes are continuously being changed by residents through reckless reformings. It is essential to adjust to today's changed ways of thinking and new living patterns in order to properly conserve these traditional registered houses. Therefore, desirable policies should be established to protect these cultural properties from senseless damage by permitting only limited reforms in those houses. The results of this study are summarized as follows:1. Living requirements of housing life have been grasped through analyses of residential behavior concerning space utilization.2. Physical transformations of living spaces were surveyed and the causes of these transformations were analyzed.
