Abstract The objective of this study is to establish the base for the nature-oriented architectural planning method. For such a goal, it analyses comparatively Feng-shui and Environmental ecology whose central concern is the interrelation of man and nature. The analytic frame consist of three points, which are their views on nature and development, considerations derived from them in the steps of planning process, and their concepts on the relation of architectural form and nature. This study shows that both of the two theories have quite differentview on nature from that of Judeo-Christian tradition which has been widely accepted in the field of architecture. So, the change of view on nature, above all, is needed for the establishment of the nature-oriented method. In the second point, some implications are to be derived from the two theories for each of the planning stages. In the third point, while Feng-shui has its aesthetic judgement on the landscape and individual building forms, Environmental ecology lays stress on the identity of whole environment and the fitness of individual forms. As a consequence of the study, the basic requirements for the nature-oriented method are suggested.
