Abstract This research tried to find out the emotive attributes of color images. A set of 103 commonly used adjectives descriptive of the affective quality as attributes of color images wasdeveloped and factor analyzed(based on 30 subjects' ratings, each of 81 different colors). Three, independent, bipolar factors of affective quality- pleasure, potency, and arousand were obtained. These three factors are dimensions of meaning and constitute the color image space, and colors are all classified and characterized by them. The most conspicuous conclusion was that the color dimensions of hue had such a small impact on most of the semantic scales, whereas it was very critical whether a color was weak or strong in chroma, dark or light in value. Color image is useful for describing the similar and contrasting meaning of colors and also allows to utilize the expression effect of color in color usage.
