Cultural Implications of the Spatial Structure of Museum Layouts |
Abstract |
This study intends to analyze the various spatial structures of the museum with reference to the mode of knowledge production and the quality of spatial experience. Knowledge production is interpreted to have normative and non-normative forms, while spatial experience in the museum to be individual and collective. These two criteria and related properties are used to describe the spatial characteristics of museum layouts. Durand's museum, Mie's museum, Wright's Guggenheim museum and Meier's High museum are examplified to illustrate the analyses of various combination. Each museum layout is analyzed to have pertinent cultural implications according to its own combination. While normative knowledge assumes museum visitors passive receiver, non-normative knowledge assumes active interpreter. And, while collective experience endows museum visits with ritual value, individual experience emphasizes personal communion between each visitor and exhibits. |
